Step out!

Where : #malakkara near #chengannur in #kerala, India.

When : Sometime last July.

Why : We spent two months last year, in a small town called Malakkara in Kerala. That too, in the rainiest months of the year. It rained 20 hours out of the 24. And when it poured, it fell thick as sheets. So one had to stay cooped up in one’s room.

But the silver lining was that every once in a while, when it did stop, the sky would still be so overcast and the breeze so pleasant that one could step out for a refreshing walk even during noon.

So here we are at a post lunch walk.
Right across the road from where we were staying, tiny lanes like these wound their way across sweeps and sweeps of paddy fields and led one into another smaller town called #arattupuzha. That is where we usually went.

The houses that lined up these roads had huge gardens… with banana, jackfruit and nutmeg trees… cardamom and black pepper plants…and more often than not an eldery resident slumbering on an arm chair or a chataii while a female sat nearby picking rice for the evenimg meal. Smiles were exchaged as as and when our eyes met. Sometimes conversations were struck too. Thankfully, as long as you speak English you don’t need to worry about communication problems in Kerala.

How lovely is it, to be in a strange land and still not feel like an outsider. To meet people and connect, just like that…no innuendos and no reasons.

But I think the walks were the loveliest for our then almost three year old son. He would run behind goats and play with dogs and feed the pigeons and chase the butterflies…a first of a kind experience for him.

There is so much the world around us has to offer…beauty, love, new experiences… If only we step out every once in a while. Out of our homes…our comfort zones…our frames of mind. Ideally, all of them.

There will always be reasons, not to. It will either be too cold, to hot or too wet. That’s life. But every once in a while, the weather will ease up on you. Give you a chance to step out.

The question is..are you going to take it??

Frozen, with a warm afterglow

Where: At a juncture near Placa De Catalunya and La Rambla
When: 5th November, 2009; sometime later than 11:00 p.m.

Why: You might wonder, why make this the first picture of the series?

It is extremely grainy; we were too tired to even adjust the settings on the camera. But still, we had to step out, right after checking into the hotel. At 11:00 p.m. in the night. When it was 10 degrees outside and we still hadn’t unpacked most of our warm clothes.

Then why the urgency, you ask?

We had just landed in Barcelona on our way to our honeymoon destination Ibiza. The months long craziness before the wedding, the even crazier but beautiful wedding, the post-wedding shenanigans, seeing off the relatives, the frantic packing and the flight which was too much to take for the fatigued and vertigo-stricken bride…everything had finally settled down. We needed that moment to matter. And we needed good food instead of the boring room service. We were so close to #larambla that we were quite sure we would find a good joint open. Turned out we were wrong. We ended up having the first meal of our honeymoon at…surprise, surprise… McDonalds!
But it didn’t matter.

As we walked back we sat by this fountain for a while and finished our coffees. The chilly air ran through the fountain and turned misty before it came and settled on our cheeks. We were frozen silly. But again, it didn’t matter.

And as we sat there, I think for the first time it started to sink in.
That how many things cease to matter, when you finally have, what matters to you the most.
I remember us sitting there for as long as the coffee could help us fight the cold.
And I remember us smiling. A lot.

And that is why although the picture is grainy, it doesn’t matter. The memory is very clear and sharp.

PS- Please ignore how red those shoes look. I assure you it’s the light playing tricks with a rather acceptable shade of red. 😀

Day 44 :: #100HappyDays

Day 44

I can just about manage enough technology to get through my day. I can handle the basic uses of a phone, the ones that I think they were initially designed for; like calling people, texting, making reminders etc.

Anyway, in the last one year, my social media learning curve, and especially handling them through my phone has been a steep learning curve that I am quite proud of. 🙂

In the same spirit,, I recently started an Instagram account. It’s been going well. And starting today, I will be posting some pictures and write-ups under ‪#‎PlacesWeOnceVisited‬ :: Memories we visit often.

It’s a journal of some spectacular moments which completely outrank the others, from our travels… All because of the stories behind these moments, which have turned them into indelible, golden memories.

Hope you get to catch some of them soon. Looking forward to connecting with you all on
Yes. It has been a ‪#‎happy‬ day. And I am ‪#‎thankful‬ for all that it came with.🙂
