Today is Wilaadat-e-Maula Ali, thirteenth day of the holy month of Rajab. A day celebrated with sweets and prayers. Incidentally, today was also a meeting for the Editorial Board of our Township In-house Magazine. While I usually make kheer for 13 Rajab; today, I had to make do with a quick version of pudding, because I was late for the meeting. Something I felt a little bad about while making that decision. But when we all sat there, enjoying that pudding, with a generous squirt of strawberry syrup to make things even more interesting; somehow that short-cut solution didn’t seem to bother me much.
We sat there, a small representative sample of the diversity of this country; a Punjabi, a Christian, a Muslim… an Oriya, a Bihari, a Dilliwaali and a UPite… enjoying a hastily put together dessert and discussing what this day and it’s celebration were all about. None of them had really heard of this day before, but in that moment, we all were together in celebrating it; bonded by an unfailing catalyst of good times – mouth watering sweets and desserts.
I don’t know of any other way to relate to festivals and celebrations, anymore. Birthdays, for me, have always been about overdoses of sinfully loaded chocolate cakes. Holi is about Gujiya. Diwali is about besan ke laddoo. 13 Rajab is about Kheer and 22 Rajab is about sweet coconut flavoured tikiya. Eid is about sewaiyaan. And of course, Makar Sankranti is all about piping hot, gajar ka halwa. There may be other staple dishes associated with these festivities, but somehow these are the only ones that flicker on my gastronomic calendar’s radar.
And that’s what I am happy about, and thankful for, today.
For the delicacies that transcend all false divisions and make people connect, on the very basic level. For the celebrations that mandate such delicacies, there by resulting in such bonhomie and socializing. For the fact that we are diverse as we are, giving us more reasons to celebrate with a even bigger variety of sweets. I am also thankful for the unabashed glutton and sweet tooth that I am. 😀
Yes. It has been a #Happy day. And I am #Thankful for all that it came with. 🙂
